Mustache

Why do people obsessively spell "mustache" with an "o" in it? This seems to be a recent trend. When I was growing up, nobody spelled "mustache" with an "o" in it. If you spelled "mustache" with an "o" in it in 1986, you were considered a Communist. It does my heart ill to think that this may have changed.

M-W.com informs us that the English word "mustache" is derived from Middle French's "moustache," and, furthermore, that "moustache" is an acceptable English variant of "mustache." A variant. If you use "moustache" in English, you're behaving variantly. I would go so far as to say that you're behaving deviantly. Keep that in mind. Communist.

In other news, a new guy just took over one of the desks in my office. I've learned a lot about him in the last few days, primarily by carefully listening to all of his phonecalls and combing through pages and pages of Google searches of his name when he's out of the office. But that's not important. What's important is that he is apparently cooler than me.

Let's compare the facts:

--He was in some moderately successful Cleveland bands, writes for Salon and Blender, has identified himself as a "writer" in my presence no fewer than ten times, and is pitching some kind of television show ideas to Showtime and HBO.

--I had some terrible love poems published in an educational magazine for junior-high-schoolers called "Literary Cavalcade" when I was thirteen.

It looks grim. Over ten years and I haven't accomplished anything else. I need something to boost my cool status over this guy's, and quick.

Time to put in a call to the editors at "Literary Cavalcade."
